R U Serious?

I recently got my first issue of Working Mother magazine (thanks, Momma) and finally had the chance to look through it. Yes, of course, I was in the bathroom. Where else would I have the chance to read a magazine without someone interrupting me, climbing on me, or ripping the pages out of my hands?!

I started reading the article, "Kids' Firsts" which went through suggested ages that children should be expected to do certain activities. For example, the expected age to start reading is 4-7 years old. Fine. That makes sense. Staying home alone? 8-11. Okay, that's a little young...but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Then I came to this one.

Getting a cell phone? 5-13 years old.

Come again?

A 5 year old with a cell phone? Are you kidding me?! Can you think of ONE single reason a 5 year old should have a cell phone? Is Cole going to call me from preschool if he wets his pants? Call his Dad when his toy tractor breaks down? Oh wait...I've got it. He can text his imaginary friend, Johnny, from China to come over and play. Good Lord.

I cringe every time I hear some of my 5th graders mention their cell phones. Where is a 10 year old going without parents? More importantly...where are they going where there is no telephone?! I just don't get it.

And a 5 year old? No. Just no.

Does your child have a cell phone? What age do you think is appropriate? Please don't say 5.

WTH is it answers!!

Apparently my pictures weren't as easy as I thought. I guess they seemed easy to me because I knew what they were so they looked EXACTLY what they were to me. But...notsomuch to everyone else. We had some very interesting guesses. Rhea...you crack me up! It was funny how many people guessed the same wrong answer on many of them. Let's get to the answers...and then I will name the big winner!

1. Buckeyes

2. Matches

3. Edamame

4. Noodles the Cat
5. Cat food

6. Onion

7. Corn cobs

Most people got 1 or 2 answers correct. BUT, the big winner with 4 correct guesses is...

TIFFANY T at Alabama Redhead Adventures

Congrats, Tiffany! You can email me with your address for your mystery prize

Hope everyone is having a great weekend. If you have a second, say a little prayer for my IRL BFF, Deb at Finding Normal, and her family. Her daughter, Addison, had to be taken to the ER last night and they are awaiting tests today. Hurry home, Addison!

Five

October 22, 2003. 5:33 a.m. That's the exact moment I became a mommy. I was blessed with a 7 pound, 2 ounce bouncing baby boy. Life has never been the same since...and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Cole was a good baby, despite a few weeks of colic. He had adorable blonde, spikey hair and big blue eyes. He was pretty easy-going and not too demanding. He loved his bouncy seat and his blue blankey....still does. He loved watching Baby Beethoven and eating sweet potatoes.

Cole's first birthday involved 3 different clothing changes. He started the day in a tux looking like a gentleman farmer. He changed into his new John Deere overalls complete with tool belt. Finally, he changed into his birthday suit for the eating of the cake. He has loved tractors since...forever. He crawled for the first time to get to Daddy's special tractor. His first words were dada and tractor. He was even obsessed with toilet paper "bales" at one. Still is...

Cole never went through the terrible twos. He was happy to have tractors and the occasional John Deere movie. His second birthday pictures looked like something out of a Ralph Lauren catalog. So handsome in his sports coat and jeans.
By age 3, Cole's tractor obsession was growing stronger. He had a one year old baby sister who he loved and adored. He has always been so caring and loving toward Claire...until she got old enough to cause trouble. Cole started speech a few months before turning 3 and has been involved in speech in some way since. In May he was put on consultation only for making such great progress in the 2 1/2 years he has been in a speech program.

By age 4, Cole became a little more interested in his birthday party attire. Suits and ties were out of the question. T-shirts and jeans are much more his style now. By 4, he knew more about tractors and equipment than many adults...certainly more than his momma. My sweet boy is now 5. Five years old. It truly seems like yesterday I was holding him against my chest, rocking him to sleep. I can remember every detail of my hospital visit, every moment of his birth. Now he is in preschool. He is doing awesome with learning how to write his letters and spell simple words. He brings home a new project or art piece every day and is so proud to show us what he's done in school. Of course, he is still tractor obsessed. He is getting old enough to go more with daddy to do "real" farming. He comes home with such a smug little hard-working attitude. He is my sensitive one...my crier. He likes to follow the rules and does what he's told. He's cautious and afraid of everything. He is a wonderful, sound sleeper. He loves to play in the dirt. He fights with Claire much more than I ever imagined two kids could fight. She always starts it. Every fight goes like this: Cole has a toy. Claire takes the toy. Cole cries. Claire laughs.

Happy Birthday, my sweet little boy. I love you.

WTH is that?!

Rhea over at Texas Word Tangle (who, incidentally, is hosting a giveaway right this very minute!!!) is always doing this fun little game and I am ALWAYS showing up at her blog too late to play. So...I decided to do it.

The only thing is...I have no idea how she gets such great pictures that are so tough to guess. I have a feeling mine are so easy you'll laugh at me and not play. Please humor me.

***We interrupt this post for a very important announcement from Little Miss. She just walked up to me and said, "Momma, butts make poop. Butts take cupcakes, cake, sugar, apples, and bananas, and makes poop. Then it's all done." Back to our regularly scheduled post.***

Take a look at these pictures (that I took around the house) and guess what they are. I know, I know. They're easy. Give me a break...it's my first time. But don't be like me when I play the game at Rhea's...DON'T look at the comments ahead of you. That's cheating.

Do as I say not as I do.

Ready...go!
Oh wait, the first person who guesses all the pictures correctly gets a little prize. I'm not telling you what it is yet. Because I don't know, either.

Disappointed

I have been looking for shoes for my sister's wedding for some time now. I want closed toe (the wedding's in December) simple, and black to go with the dress. This is the dress, only without the big silver bow/sash.
I hate the round toe shoes that are so popular these days. I just don't think they are very attractive, especially for a fancy dress. They look so little girl and clunky. I wanted something patent and sexy. I was so excited when I found these shoes at Target for only $19.99! I couldn't order them fast enough. They were black patent, sexy, not too high, and the toe was not too pointy, not too round. Agree?Imagine my disappointment when I opened the box that my friendly UPS delivery man brought to me this morning to find these. That is so NOT what I had in mind. Look how round and short the toe is! It doesn't look anything like the shoe in the picture. At least not to me. And they look even worse on.

This looks like a picture of Claire's foot in little girl's shoes. Yuck. These are going back to Target tomorrow and the search for the perfect shoe continues...

It's 9:54 and I'm still up! You know it must be Fall Break!

Day One of Fall Break is over. I took the kids to daycare and went shopping in the big city with my mom. I got some Christmas shopping done and had a fantastic lunch. It was a great day. Now it feels like Saturday and I get all giddy when I realize I still have 3 days off! The kids and I are looking forward to a relaxing day tomorrow. Hopefully they can keep the arguing to a minimum so I can enjoy my extra day off.

I usually pay $140.00 a week for daycare. I know that's very inexpensive compared to many other places, so I am grateful that it is "cheap." But it still pains me every week to write that check. Today I was excited that I would save a few bucks since the kids were only going 4 days this week. When I picked the kids up and asked for the total so I could write the check...she told me it was going to be exactly the same since the per day rate is more than the weekly rate. $140.00 for 4 days. Hmmm. This is not what I was hoping to hear so I threatened the daycare lady with bringing the kids back tomorrow. She quickly knocked the cost down to $130.00. :)

Last week the kids and I went to a local farmer's market for pumpkins. I forgot the camera but managed to get a couple decent pics on my phone.
They have a pumpkin launcher that they run every 30 minutes in the fall. They put a small pumpkin (about 8 inch diameter), set it off, and the pumpkin is OUT OF THERE at 400 mph. The pumpkins we saw went way beyond the row of trees you see in the distance. If you look close you can see an old beat up car in front of the bald gentleman that got in my shot. They lower the cannon and shoot the pumpkin (still at 400 mph) at the car. The pumpkin hits the side of the car and EXPLODES! It's crazy!

We took Jose, also known as THE MOST SPOILED DOG IN THE WORLD, with us last weekend to Grandma and Grandpa's house. It was a little cool out but he was begging to stick his head out the window. He thinks he's such a badass farm dog.
But then he started shivering beyond belief and fluffed Cole's blankie right over him. How badass are you feeling right now, Jose? Or should I call you Josefina?

This picture has no point other than I was making a funny sound to get Jackie the Cow's attention and she did that sideways head turn that dogs do but I swear I thought she was gonna rotate her head all the way around. It was hysterical!

The kids and I took a nice, long Gator right last night while waiting for Daddy to get back from his trip. It was a great evening...warm enough for the ride but with a chill in the air warning of cooler temperatures to come. Cole kept hopping off to collect corn cobs for his "collection." He now has a rock collection and corn cob collection. Good times.

Little Miss was posing and showing off her multiple personalities. Here is serious Claire. Well, as serious as anyone can be covered in cherry popsicle and ketchup.

This is crazy Claire. She will get a wild hair and start grinning so hard her whole face shakes. If you don't know what I mean, you must click here to watch this video of her from last winter.

And this is mischievous Claire...otherwise known as the face I see every minute of every day. Just look at that grin....the twinkle in her eye. You KNOW she is up to something.

Hope everyone has a great Friday. I know I will!

Whew!

What a fantastic day over at SITS. When I published my SITS post last night, I didn't think much about it. I had a l.o.n.g. day in the classroom. Picked the kids up from daycare..got them snacked and settled. Threw in a load of laundry, got things picked up a bit, and sat down to check my email. Lo and behold I had 30 some messages just from SITS girls. I swear it was like Christmas...only I guess it was Sitsmas. It's amazing how little comments from strangers can turn your day right around. It was so fantastic to check out new blogs, leave them comments, and yes...even add more blogs to my ever-growing list of favorites. A big thanks to Heather and Tiffany for organizing such a comment love fest!

I also have to say how many people I have met through SITS and didn't even realize it. I have all of these blogs I read nearly everyday. Not just on my blogroll...Lord, that hasn't been updated in for.ever. But in my favorites...my "bookmarked" blogs..you wouldn't believe the strong of orange Bs there are. But I love every single one of them and love sitting down in the evenings to catch up on the daily happenings in the blogosphere. One of these days I will put them all in my blogroll. You know, in all my spare time.

The Secret

Once upon a time there was a blogger. A relatively new, naive, innocent, countrified blogger named John Deere Mom. She had a few fans...devoted readers if you will. Readers like Deb, Teachergirl, Cupcake, Kat, Heather, Christy, the list goes on and on. Actually, it doesn't. It pretty much stops there.

BUT, that all changed on June 5, 2008 when I was the featured blogger (the second one ever, mind you) on a fantastically pink leopard print blog called The Secret is in the Sauce. An interesting tid-bit? I THINK I am the only blogger to also have a picture featured. Yes, it was the Russian Peasant in all her glory. Tiffany can't get enough of the Russian Peasant. And really, who can?!

SITS, to those of you IN on the secret, is a wonderful community of women (well, mostly women) bloggers interested only in recognizing awesome blogs and encouraging comment lovin'. And they have featured some awesome blogs. I have added more SITS featured blogs to my reader in the past few months than I have time for! But, I make time for them because that's what SITS is all about.

If you haven't yet checked out SITS, what are you waiting for? You will find new, wonderful blogs to read and when you are the featured blogger, your Sitemeter account won't even be able to keep UP with the demand. You will have more readers than you ever imagined. Here are just a few of the blogs I have found and continue to visit on a weekly basis:

Caroline
The Blarney Spot
Maternal Mirth
One Crazy Chick

On Tuesday, SITS is hosting an all-day Blogathon with crazy give-aways and surprises planned all.day.long. This is one day when I kinda sorta wished I was a stay at home mom. Ha. That will pass soon enough. Like when the kids wake up and start arguing. I won't be THAT sad to have to work. But for those of you who can take part in the SITS mania tomorrow...HAVE FUN!!

Maksed Out

So. For all of you who do not watch Dancing with the Stars...you might not have heard the news. The no good, very bad, terrible, horrible, awful news.

Maks is out.

Now before you start snickering...he wasn't VOTED out. His partner, Misty May Treanor, was injured during rehearsal. She was injured so badly that she is out of the competition....which means my boyfriend is out too. *sigh* Such injustice! Not to mention the fact that this woman is an amazing, Olympic gold medalist volleyball player...and she gets HURT DANCING on a game show?! She was to be some kind of po'd. But not as po'd as yours truly now that Maks is out. No more of this?!
No fair.
If you didn't see the video or just don't watch DWTS...you MUST watch the first 55 seconds of this video. Seriously. You can actually HEAR her achilles tendon pop. It is crazy.

Poor Misty May.

Please Excuse John Deere Mom from Blogging

I have a doctor's note, I swear. Okay, that's a lie. I don't really have a doctor's note. But I DO have a mountain of dirty laundry, clean yet unfolded laundry, dirty dishes, unswept floors, and kids in dire need of baths. So forgive me for being absent the past few days. I promise to return to regularly scheduled blogging soon.

I shall leave you with this.
I don't know who wrote it...but I am guessing it was a man. Just saying.
